Evidence-based Recommendations in Practice

For the Raising the Bar campaign, IIHR combined interviews, focus groups, a parent survey, and health communication evidence to recommend ways to strengthen efforts to keep youth events substance-free in Marin County. The report proposed:

  • Tailor messages to different audiences. Use what parents and community members shared to make outreach more relevant to their experiences.
  • Make the requested action clear. Explain which youth events the campaign addresses and communicate the value of adults modeling substance-free behavior.
  • Work with community partners. Engage parents, students, coaches, and schools to share messages and reinforce expectations at youth events.
  • Test and refine the approach. Pilot selected recommendations and collect feedback to assess feasibility and improve future efforts.
